Further to the recent Defra consultation first published in October 2023 proposing the UK-wide ban of manufacturing and selling wipes containing plastic, the UK Government has announced an update stating that the legislation will possibly be introduced as early as this summer.
This will be followed by an 18-month transition period post-legislation passage to allow businesses time to adjust. Notably, products made in the UK for export will be exempt from the legislation.
While urging manufacturers to shift towards producing plastic-free wet wipes, the government will allow exemptions to ensure plastic-containing wet wipes are accessible in cases where viable alternatives are unavailable, such as for medical disinfection purposes.
As a company we have always promoted and encouraged refill not landfill, whereby empty tubs, buckets and dispensers are all utilised by using our refills packs instead of simply being disposed of.
I am happy to report that we have been very active in the sales and promotion of Biodegradable wipes for over 5 years. Plastic wipes has and continues to serve us all well, being both a cheaper alternative, recyclable and in some cases I’ve heard the argument that when finished with, they are incinerated (the emissions in the right incinerator being 100% clean) and used as a fuel to produce energy, thereby a very cost effective wipe.
